Director Biography.
Declan Arrighi is a writer, director, and editor, raised in suburban Australia. With a background in journalism, he currently works as a filmmaker and creative producer in Sydney. His previous credits include the acclaimed short documentary The Kebab Man, which premiered on SBS in late 2020. Wonder Down Under is his first narrative short film. Director Statement.
Wonder Down Under is an ode to understated, under-appreciated, and yet extraordinary mums. I was lucky to be raised by these women; my mum is one, my Nonna is one, and my Nan was one. They are the beating heart of Australian suburbia. In many ways and to many people, they are superheroes. Wonder Down Under is both a satire of modern superhero films, and a love-letter to the women who raised us. Like life, it is equal parts funny, sad, sincere, and optimistic. It was developed with the help of many wonderful people, from my mum, my partner, my grandmothers, my colleagues, my extended family, and my close friends. Their insights helped fill gaps of knowledge and experience that I will never have. I am proud to have a majority-female crew on the film, and I am indebted to the team of 15+ wonderful script consultants who helped round out Barb Barrett’s story. At its heart, Wonder Down Under is about a character who navigates life's struggles with humour and grace. Just like the mums who raised us.
