Director Statement.
This is a story of friendship and is set in the tropical location of Darwin in Northern Australia, where I grew up and still visit regularly. In this animated short film I have sought to present a series of personal observations of Darwin that have emerged over many years. The theme of home rests at the heart of this story and through this, I want to express how engaging with our local community and other cultures can be both enriching and lead us to feel more connected. To capture the vibrancy and unique textures of this tropical city, I constructed 3D sets that were hand painted and then photographed, sometimes with a stop motion camera track. The characters were animated and individually painted in 2D so they sit naturally within their environment. I chose a 4:3 aspect ratio to keep intimacy between the characters and also capture the fullness of the open skies and large indoor spaces. The colours were carefully chosen to reflect the development of the characters throughout the story while the animated transitions, a signature of my personal storytelling style, enhance the flow between scenes and act as non-verbal narrative devices.
