Ella Carey is a writer, director, and animator based in Melbourne, Australia. Ella moved to Sydney at the age of 19 to attend the Australian Film Television & Radio School. Upon graduation in 2012, Ella began working as a production designer and gained invaluable experience working with notable directors in the industry, which has since informed her directorial work. In 2014, Ella won an APDG Award for her production design work on the Emmy award winning TV series, 7 Days Later. She was one of nine women profiled in ABC’s Women in Screen series for ABC & Screen Australia ‘Your Time’ campaign. Ella’s directorial work has been collectively screened at festivals including Flickerfest, St Kilda Film Festival, Byron Bay Int FIlm Fest, Animafest Zagreb, LA Shorts & Boston Film Festival. Ella's short animation, Thanks A Lot Duchamp, was selected as part of the film program ‘The Magic Arts: Australian Animation from 1970s to Now’ which draws attention to the past 50 years of animation in Australia, held at the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art. In 2022 Ella wrote and directed the short film PRAWN which premiered at Byron Bay Int Film Festival and has gone onto screen at many other festivals including BIFF (Brisbane), Human Rights Arts and Film Festival, Lift-off Tokyo, Berlin Shorts Awards, Venice Shorts, Florida Shorts and BIFF (Sweden.) With a passion for telling engaging stories through pictures, Ella aims to continue developing her naturalistic and emotive aesthetic.
